Quick Checks
Rule out demo mode
If the display shows OF F or the lights work but nothing cools, the fridge may be in display (demo) mode, which shuts off cooling. On many LG models you exit it by holding the Refrigerator and Ice Plus buttons together for about five seconds. Check your owner's manual for your exact model.
Check the temperature settings
LG recommends 37°F for the fridge and 0°F for the freezer. Make sure nobody bumped the setting, and give the fridge 24 hours after any change.
Clean the condenser coils and check the fan
Unplug the fridge, remove the lower back cover and vacuum the coils. Plug it back in and listen: the condenser fan near the compressor should run when the compressor runs. Dust buildup is one of the most common reasons an LG fridge runs warm in Southern California garages and kitchens.
Listen for the evaporator fan
Open the freezer door and press the door switch. You should hear and feel the fan blowing. Silence, ice on the freezer back panel, or an ER FF or ER IF code points to a fan or defrost problem.
Common Causes
Display (demo) mode is on
DIYDemo mode keeps lights and the display working with cooling switched off. It is often turned on by accident while cleaning the control panel.
Dirty condenser coils
DIYLG condensers sit under the fridge. When dust blocks airflow, the system can't release heat, so the fridge slowly warms and the compressor runs nonstop.
Failed fan motor (ER FF, ER CF, ER IF)
Call ProLG reports fan problems with error codes: ER FF for the freezer fan, ER CF for the condenser fan, ER IF for the ice maker fan. A fan that stops leaves the fridge warm even when the compressor runs.
Defrost failure (ER dH)
Call ProIf the defrost heater, sensor or control fails, ice builds on the evaporator coil and blocks airflow to the fresh food section. A full manual defrost helps for a few days, but the part has to be fixed or the ice comes back.
Linear compressor not starting
Call ProLG's inverter linear compressor is efficient but has a known history of failures in some models. Signs: the fridge is quiet, the compressor is hot or clicking, both sections warm up together. Diagnosis requires checking the compressor, the control board and the refrigerant charge.
Refrigerant leak or restriction
Call ProA leak or clog in the sealed system slowly reduces cooling. This is sealed system work and needs an EPA-certified technician with recovery equipment.
When to Call a Professional
- The fridge stays warm 24 hours after you exit demo mode and clean the coils.
- You see an error code such as ER FF, ER CF, ER IF, ER dH, ER rS or ER CO.
- Both the fridge and freezer are warm and the compressor is silent, clicking or very hot.
- Ice keeps building on the freezer back wall after a manual defrost.
- You want to know whether your LG compressor is still under LG's parts warranty before paying for a repair.
Safety Warning
Unplug the refrigerator before removing any cover. Never puncture or cut refrigerant lines. Food kept above 40°F for more than two hours should be thrown out (USDA guidance).
Estimated Repair Cost
Depends on the cause: a setting or coil cleaning costs nothing, a fan or defrost part is a moderate repair, compressor work is the largest. Our technician diagnoses first and gives you the exact price before any work starts.
